Whether you are a man or a woman, you have probably thought about changing your curtains, choosing a different duvet or bedspread, recovering down pillows, or having a slipcover made for your favorite, but old couch or chair. Sometimes shopping retail just doesn't provide you with the design colors or quality of your homes design.
Here's the solution. If you know how to sew, that's great - you probably already know what I'm going to say. If you don't sew, you can hire a tailor to make your curtains, fashion new pillow covers, whip up a duvet or slipcover for you, for sometimes less than retail cost.
Purchasing fabric from one of our outstanding textile and fabric stores in the City will allow you to customize the design, choose unique fabrics and really make a statement in your home. Most of the fabric store employees know their fabrics and will readily recommend the right type, amount and fabric texture for your project, as long as you bring in accurate measurements. Some customers bring in photos of the item and the room, or swatches of other fabrics to insure design continuity.
Here are some 2 of our favorite stores:
Britex Fabrics - 148 Geary St., San Francisco, CA 94108 (415)392-2910
This is the creme de la creme of fabric stores sandwiched in between designer retail stores in the financial district/Union Square and owned by the Spector family since it's inception. Though recently sold, we're hoping they find a new location. The ladies who work there are extremely knowledgeable and they have stock of specific notions that you may not find elsewhere. They recommend you take the elevator to the top floor and work your way down. Their fabric selection is intoxicating and they offer finer, high end fabrics as well as a cross section of standard fabrics. Their known for having a few cranky sales people, but never mind, just move onto the next one - there are plenty of people there who want to help.
SAL Beressi Fabrics - 1504 Bryant St., San Francisco, CA 94103, (415) 861-5004
For a fabulous selection of upholstery fabric and wonderful service head over there for your next project. Parking is easy, which is a plus. Their pricing is in a wide range, though they will offer remnants which are more reasonable. They are also generous with swatches, which really helps when considering re-upholstering furniture for the home to make sure you've chosen the right fabric for your design. We dare say, you may even go just to browse. They have a really great website too - to give you a taste of what's to come.
